This hybrid event will explore the historical connections between Benjamin Franklin, Hillsborough Castle, and the political tensions that shaped the American Revolution. Featuring Hillsborough Castle curator David Orr, the program will place Franklin’s diplomacy and the transatlantic crisis of the 1770s within a broader shared history, using visuals and historical materials to examine the people, ideas, and negotiations that helped set the stage for American independence. Timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the event will also highlight the value of examining contested history through dialogue across the Atlantic.

The College, Career & Leadership Academy is a student-development program sponsored and coordinated by Dr. Kenneth Hawkins and hosted at Hillsborough College’s Brandon Campus. The Academy is an educational initiative organized by Dr. Hawkins to provide students with structured opportunities for academic growth, college and career preparation, leadership development, financial literacy, mentoring, and community engagement. The program is open to all eligible students regardless of race, ethnicity, or gender and is designed to help participants develop the practical skills, personal responsibility, and confidence necessary for success in school, college, careers, and their communities. The Academy meets on the second Saturday of each month from September through April, excluding December, and combines interactive workshops with guidance from professionals in education, business, healthcare, STEM, and other career fields. Students participate in sessions addressing study skills, time management, goal setting, financial literacy, career readiness, communication, leadership, wellness, community service, and personal development. The program also incorporates guest speakers, mentoring, academic support, experiential learning opportunities, college and career exploration, volunteer service, and opportunities to learn about scholarships and postsecondary education. Students are encouraged to establish academic and personal goals, strengthen their study habits and self-discipline, explore career pathways, develop workplace and communication skills, understand basic financial principles, and practice responsible leadership through service to others. Parents and guardians are also encouraged to remain involved in their students' progress. The overall purpose of the College, Career & Leadership Academy is straightforward: to help students become stronger students, prepared college applicants, career-ready young adults, responsible leaders, and productive members of their communities.
